More Easter green beers on tap in Pivovarská Brána today

10258710_843411132341220_6516633669045516233_nGreen Thursday is one of the most important days in Church calendar and Pivovarska Brana pub (Hradec Králové) decided to have some green beers to commemorate this day. The beers are mainly from medium sized breweries in Jihlava, Náchod and Vratislavice. The only exception is the second brewery from Jihlava – my favourite Radniční brewery and I also suppose that their beer will be the best.

I´m not a big fan but – well – the green beers in CZ walked a long way since their beginning couple of years ago so maybe they will stay on the market for a long time. But personally I would swap this green beer trend for american pumpkin beer phenomena immediately . 🙂

Pivovar Čechmánek Zlín — April 15, 2014

Pivovar Čechmánek Zlín

Pretty interesting brewery was opened some months ago in Zlín (Southern Moravia). Its owner is very well known Czech ice hockey and ex NHL goalie Roman Čechmánek.

RAS4f129a_105820_3451015Čechmánek played 212 games in NHL and he is best known for his two seasons with Philadelphia Flyers. He won William M. Jennings trophy in 2002-03 season sharing it with Martin Brodeur and his teamate Robert Esche. He was traded next season to Los Angeles Kings and after a mediocre season Cechmanek returned to Europe to play for teams in Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic. He ended his career in 2008-09 as a member of HC Třinec in Czech Extraliga.

He was also a member of Czech Gold team in Olympics games in Nagano in 1998.

After retirement he started wine bussines and in 2013 he opened small brewpub Pivovar Čechmánek in his hometown Zlín.

1276125-img-sport-cechmanek-cropPivovar Čechmánek is modern craft brewery. They are producig “classic Czech styles” – pilsener lager and dunkel that most of the Czech require in pubs and then small batches of different and “more exotic” styles like coffee stout, IPA or honey beer. The newest addition is more and more popular “green beer” (probably pilsener with some herbs) as an Easter special.

The label desing and beer names are connected with lions. Lion is Czech national animal and it is also the animal that has main position in Czech national coat of arms. The design is very modern, simplified and I love it.

If everything goes right I will have a chance to visit this brewery on Easter Monday so I´m looking forward to it and I only hope that quality of beer will be exceptional as their presentation.

More Easter specials! Permon and Chodovar — April 11, 2014

More Easter specials! Permon and Chodovar

1507129_10152370252042363_5141521574521656175_nEaster is coming and PR managers of Czech breweries are very busy. They started to produce their specials and more and more of them are joining this kind of tradition. The beers are traditional as well. Mostly it´s a pilsener lager with little bit more alc volume. Usually about 5.1 – 5.6% alc. Sometimes it´s polotmavy lager or Vienna style lager. So not much of diversity here.

There are two more typical examples:

Chodovar Velikonoční Albi with a cute doggie label. Chodovar is a brewery in Chodova Plana near Karlovy Vary or Cheb. Their beers are not bad but not great either. I tasted it last year and the it was just right.

Permon Velikonoční třináctka is from Permon brewery in Sokolov. This brewery is one of my favourites because their beers are great and they are brave enough to brew IPAs, APAs or Stouts. So I will try to get this one as well because I strongly believe that it will be at least very decent special.

As many of others Czech breweries they decided to brew an Easter special. The special is going to be Vienna style lager (Polotmavy in Czech) with about 5.2% alc, copper color and smooth taste. You will have a chance to taste it from April 14th in Frydek-Mistek and Ostrava.

Rampušák Easter Specials — April 10, 2014

Rampušák Easter Specials

1613970_501673036605405_2160398848219429902_nRampušák brewery from Dobruska (near Hradec Kralove) prepared two special beers for Easter season. They both are probably pilsener lagers – hoppy and pale – Kančenčina 14 with 5.6% alc and Velikonoční Rampušák with 4.9% alc. My experience with Rampušák is good their beer in general is pretty decent so I expect that these Easter specials will be enjoyable as well. And I quite like the labels too. In brewery, some special shops and selected restaurants available now.

Mordýř Velikonoční 14 — April 9, 2014

Mordýř Velikonoční 14

soudek_miniMany of Czech´s breweries are making something special for Easter time and holidays. It´s typically stronger (about 6% alc) pale pilsener. Mordýř brewery from Dolní Ředice is no exception and because of their overall quality this one will be interesting to taste. On the market since Apr 11th.
