Two interesting Czech Christmas specials — December 17, 2014

Two interesting Czech Christmas specials

Two of the most interesting Czech breweries made a special Christmas batch. Usually you can buy around Christmas time in beer shops all over the CZ some special Vienna lagers, pilseners etc. but these two took a different path. Clock brewery from Brno brewed Zlate prasatko (Golden Pig) and its weizenbock and Beskydsky pivovarek from Ostravice made Semi Dark IPA from czech and oregon hops. Both will be a treat.10689499_517091465060440_543534049796028813_n 10489633_817751504933109_2951030986814528753_n

Budweiser Budvar B:CRYO – frozen experiment from Ceske Budejovice — November 13, 2014

Budweiser Budvar B:CRYO – frozen experiment from Ceske Budejovice

Interesting fact. One of the most revolutionary beers is produced by one of the most conservative breweries in the country. Really. Budweiser Budvar created something like ice bock but even more bizarre. It’s beer without the body, frozen essence of strong lager that is sold on special bottles and that is unfrozing right on the table when customer buys it. It´s called B:CRYO and it will be available soon in selected pubs mainly near Ceske Budejovice and Prague. I’m kind of want to try it but the prize will be quite high (USD 25-40) and availability will be limited.

More info (and even some photos) in Czech – here

But it’s another example how even the biggest commercial breweries are trying to offer something new for their customers. Primator brewery is selling its brand new IPA as well as brewery Velky Chlumec. Times are slowly changing even in the Czech republic.

Three new beers from central Europe. Styles and tastes may vary. — November 10, 2014

Three new beers from central Europe. Styles and tastes may vary.

European craft beer scene is booming! We can see couple of very interesting new beers almost every week and I´m eager to try them all even it´ll be very diffilcut. 🙂 This week I discovered these three and this time even the labels are amazing! The first one is from Poland, second one is Austrian and the third is from CZ.

Hops, Dearh and Taxes is Spanish Cedar Aged Black IPA by Piwne Podziemie (Beer Underground) – quite new craft brewers from Rozdzalow, Chelm (near Lublin, PL). By the label I can say that these guys are absolutely nuts and I´d love to see more of their beers.

Austrian Bevog Brewery from Bad Radkersburg is one of the few craft breweries in the country outside Vienna. I love their labels and this one (reminding me a movie Where the Wild things are) is their best. Excellent. A I thing that the beer will be as good too.

The last new beer for today is one of the few Czech Saisons. Saisons are not yet very much popular here because their complicated taste and maybe because it´s very far from classic Czech lager in taste as beer can be. So Snajdr craft brewery is trying to change this and I´m big fan of it.

Nomad & Zhurak Chilli IPA — September 25, 2014

Nomad & Zhurak Chilli IPA

Collaboration beers are still pretty unique in the Czech Republic. So this project is something we should focus on. Flying brewery Nomad brewed a special Chilli IPA (6.2alc) in Zhurak brewery in Chocenovice. The label is great and it´s a fresh wind to the hot chilli beers that are pretty famous in some special gourmet clubs.10694347_782125211845959_351385854987544751_o

Kostelecké Vykuleni 2014 — September 16, 2014

Kostelecké Vykuleni 2014

One of the best beer events took place last weekend near Prague. It´s not so famous so the crowd is not to large and drinking is mixed with a showing of cooper works with beer barrels that are traditional and hand crafted.

It was a great day. The brewery in Kostelec nad Cernymi Lesy (near Prague) made us all welcomed because Vykuleni was an event with great food, delicious beer and friendly atmosphere. Me and my friends enjoyed it very much and I must say that the special beer brewed for this occasion only – Snajdr Elias15 – english type smoked porter was absolutely amazing! But there were more than that. Cerna Svine – dunkel with six differents malts in it, Smolinec – belgian type Witbier with very aromatic smell and fruity taste – very brave brew indeed or Kotek – vienna lager made for Vykuleni in Frydlant brewery. And single malts from Snajdr. And more that 20 beers from small breweries from all the Czech region.

I´m very happy that I was able to attend this event and I can´t wait till next year to their spring event – Vysmoleni 2015. I´ll try very hard to be there and enjoy the beers and the atmosphere of old times brewery again.

Three more days to Vykuleni in Kostelec! — September 10, 2014

Three more days to Vykuleni in Kostelec!

As Pivni filosof (Max Bahnson) wrote: “Vykulení is quite similar to Vysmolení, but bigger, with more beers and breweries, including some imported ones (you can see the whole list here) and with a focus on floor malts. Like at the sibling festival in May, there will be beers drawn from the wood in different ways, but also a few single malt beers brewed by the in-house Černokostelecký minipivovar Šnajdr.”

Can´t wait, it´ll be much fun and I hope I´ll be able to tweet live from this event here:

Hc Dukla Jihlava – brewery sponsored hockey team — August 26, 2014

Hc Dukla Jihlava – brewery sponsored hockey team

Another jersey for beer heads. This time it´s ice hockey team from the Czech Republic – HC Dukla Jihlava. The main partner is local industrial brewery Pivovar Jihlava which brews beer named Ježek (Hedgehog) which is famous for its not-so-good reputation. “At present, the brewery in Jihlava belongs to the Czech brewery group Pivovary Lobkowicz. In summer 2008, the brewery restored beer production according to the original recipes. Compared to its previous status,” they say that “the beer now has a full flavour and darker colour, and traditional floor malt produced in the Vysočina region is used. 11° Ježek beer is returning to its previous position – real brewed beer for a good price.”

HC Dukla Jihlava, founded in 1956, is an ice hockey team in the Czech Republic. It won the Czechoslovak Extraliga title 12 times: six consecutive championships beginning in 1967, then in 1974, four consecutive championships beginning in 1982, and again in 1991. As of 2006, HC Jihlava plays in the Czech 1. liga after being relegated from the Czech Extraliga in 2004-05.

The most notable players are Holik brothers or Dominik Hasek who had a year long stint during his army service here.

Minipivovar Veselka Litomysl — July 30, 2014

Minipivovar Veselka Litomysl

The birthplace of world famous composer Bedrich Smetana finally has a small brewery or brewpub. The place is called Veselka or Na Veselce and currently they produce two beers – both of them named after the most famous resident of the city – Bedrichova 11 – pale pilsener and (probably) vienna lager (polotmave).

The design of the labels is pretty good – internet presentaton can be way better. Their beer is quite new but the pilsener won some prize in some food show in Pardubice so I guess it´s pretty decent.

On August 9th the city of Litomysl is organizing a small beer festival so maybe I will go there and see how the beer is.
