Pivovar Lyer Modrava — April 24, 2014

Pivovar Lyer Modrava

The new brewpub or brewhotel opened in Šumava Mountains (south of Prague near Czech-German borders). It´s quite new phenomena. Big hotel resorts in Czech most favourite locations are adding small breweries to help themselves in competition on the supply side. In Krkonose (Giant Mountains), there is a small brewery in Luční bouda, in Beskydy mountains, there is Lomnan Brewery by the Hotel Pod Kyčmolem in Horni Lomna.

And now there is this new one in Šumava. Lyer Brewery by the Penzion Modrava in Modrava, one of the biggest tourist places in National Park Šumava). The name – Lyer – stands for the owner of the brewery nad hotel – Ing. Radovan Lyer.

The portofolio is quite classic – according to all information I could get – they brew  Lyer10, Lyer11, Lyer12 – bohemian pilsener style lagers and Lyer 11 – dunkel lager.

I´m really interested in quality of these beers because I´m really afraid that this type of small hotel breweries is focused just to get an attention to the hotel and not so much to the beer quality. But I´d love to be wrong here.

Pivovar Čechmánek Zlín — April 15, 2014

Pivovar Čechmánek Zlín

Pretty interesting brewery was opened some months ago in Zlín (Southern Moravia). Its owner is very well known Czech ice hockey and ex NHL goalie Roman Čechmánek.

RAS4f129a_105820_3451015Čechmánek played 212 games in NHL and he is best known for his two seasons with Philadelphia Flyers. He won William M. Jennings trophy in 2002-03 season sharing it with Martin Brodeur and his teamate Robert Esche. He was traded next season to Los Angeles Kings and after a mediocre season Cechmanek returned to Europe to play for teams in Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic. He ended his career in 2008-09 as a member of HC Třinec in Czech Extraliga.

He was also a member of Czech Gold team in Olympics games in Nagano in 1998.

After retirement he started wine bussines and in 2013 he opened small brewpub Pivovar Čechmánek in his hometown Zlín.

1276125-img-sport-cechmanek-cropPivovar Čechmánek is modern craft brewery. They are producig “classic Czech styles” – pilsener lager and dunkel that most of the Czech require in pubs and then small batches of different and “more exotic” styles like coffee stout, IPA or honey beer. The newest addition is more and more popular “green beer” (probably pilsener with some herbs) as an Easter special.

The label desing and beer names are connected with lions. Lion is Czech national animal and it is also the animal that has main position in Czech national coat of arms. The design is very modern, simplified and I love it.

If everything goes right I will have a chance to visit this brewery on Easter Monday so I´m looking forward to it and I only hope that quality of beer will be exceptional as their presentation.

New microbrewery in Hradec Králové? — April 14, 2014

New microbrewery in Hradec Králové?

10250199_10152374578202363_9201910761781746115_nHradec Králové (100km east from Prague) is my home city so I´m still very curious about what´s happening there. As for the beer Hradec Králové isn´t interesting much but times are slowly changing. There is one very good beer shop (Pivoňka), one exceptional pub with its own beer (Pivovarská brána – but their beer is brewed in Prague for now) and one very rarely brewing picobrewery Rambousek. But there will be more.

Pivonka pointed out on its Facebook page that homebrewers called Ovipistan are preparing new microbrewery in Hradec Kralove. In the picture, you cas see their first test batch. It´s Bohemian Pilsener called President and according to the source it´s pretty good. So I really do hope that the guys will make it and the new Hradec microbrewery will be opened soon and we will have a chance to drink another beer from a beautiful queens´city.

Rampušák Easter Specials — April 10, 2014

Rampušák Easter Specials

1613970_501673036605405_2160398848219429902_nRampušák brewery from Dobruska (near Hradec Kralove) prepared two special beers for Easter season. They both are probably pilsener lagers – hoppy and pale – Kančenčina 14 with 5.6% alc and Velikonoční Rampušák with 4.9% alc. My experience with Rampušák is good their beer in general is pretty decent so I expect that these Easter specials will be enjoyable as well. And I quite like the labels too. In brewery, some special shops and selected restaurants available now.

Clock brewery unveiled their first label design — April 1, 2014

Clock brewery unveiled their first label design

1795906_684277544947173_1003682571_oThe soon-to-be-open brewery in Potštejn is finishing their preparations. Today, they published first label design for (probably) their very first beer – bohemian pilsener called “Echt dvanáctka” – something like “The real twelve”. Personally I really do hope that the taste of the beer will be much better than the graphic taste of their designer. I should know it by June when the Clock brewery will present their beer in Hradec Kralove in its first Pivobrani.

UPDATE: It seems that this could be an April´s Fool hoax. I wish that was true! And If so, well played Clock, well played! 🙂
