Beer World Cup – Final! — July 22, 2014

Beer World Cup – Final!

Fanfare please! It´s a final of Beer World Cup and it will be a battle of two different styles!

The first finalist is JAPAN – Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout – Caramel, roasted, black and chocolate malts provide an explosion of coffee like flavors. The strong espresso character comes from the addition of espresso beans to the boil. Notes of vanilla, dark fruit , cocao and chocolate. The very unusual character of Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout stems from the fact that Kiuchi Brewery is using the recipe of a Russian Imperial Stout as base. Pitch black color, big brown head. Aromas of chocolate, roasted bitterness, black currants, dark fruits.

RateBEER score 99/99 – 3.82 Avg.

The second finalist is SPAIN – Nomada Papaya Crash (Imperial IPA) – Beer orange ocher, mild haze and creamy white lather. Intense aroma with ripe tropical fruit, with notes of caramel. The palate is dense, full in flavor, very good balance between the bitterness of the hops and the sweet malt and papaya.Largo and fruity aftertaste. Imperial Style Beer India Pale Ale (alcoholic power with high doses of hops used), using Pale malt, Caramel & Specials. Speakers Citra hops, Columbus and Centennial that give about 100 IBU’s (bitterness level). Surprising IIPA, very well balanced, where Papaya provides an integrated natural sweetness of estilo.Sus own bitterness over 9% vol.alc barely noticeable while savoring this renowned, listed and sought Papaya Crash.

RateBEER score 98/93 – 3.75 Avg.

Can you guess the winner?

Beer World Cup – Semifinals! — July 15, 2014

Beer World Cup – Semifinals!

We are almost over! We are down to last four! Semifinals! And there are four beers left in the battle for Beer World Cup!

SF1 – Japan/Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout –  Russia/Stepan Razin Porter
SF2 – Spain/Nomada Papaya Crash (Imperial IPA) – Argentina/Antares IPA

Beer World Cup – Quarter-finals — July 11, 2014

Beer World Cup – Quarter-finals

We are down to eight! Eight beers from three continents made the stage. So let´s have a look. And it turns out to be a style wars!

QF1: Chile/Kross Stout – Japan/Hitachino Nest Espresso Stout
QF2:Ecuador/Doggerlander Bongo´s IPA – Russia/Stepan Razin Porter
QF3: Spain/Nomada Papaya Crash – Colombia/BBC Septimazo IPA
QF4: Argentina/Antares IPA – South Korea/Craftworks Jirisan Moon Bear IPA

So it´s stout vs. stout in QF1 and battle of IPAs in QF3. There are only two countries from Europe left (Russia and Spain) and the dominant continent is South America with beer in every QF. That is interesting but the reason probably is that south americans can make the beer interesting as for labels, names, colors and styles maybe a bit more in some cases then brewers in traditional markets.

Beer World Cup – Round of 16 — July 10, 2014

Beer World Cup – Round of 16

largebeermap

The knockout stage is here! I let some of my frieds vote and they had to choose two beers from every group which they liked to taste it the most. I made a tables then and there are the results! For Round of 16 I will use only names of states and kinds of beer so you can get a perspective what styles are interesting for tasting.

Mexico (Stout) – Chile (Oatmeal Stout)
Japan (Espresso Stout) – Italy (Saison)
Ecuador (IPA) – Bosnia & Herzegovina (Keller/Landbier)
Portugal (Pilsener) – Russia (Porter)
Brasil (Rauchbier) – Spain (Imperial IPA)
Colombia (IPA) – England (Oatmeal Stout)
France (Bierre de Garde) – Argentina (IPA)
USA (APA) – South Korea (IPA)

Suprisingly Germany, Netherlands and Belgium didn´t make it to the Round of 16. The reasons are probably that I have chosen not so attractive brands or that my voters were in mood for something more exotic and in fact they were a bit suprised that you can find some very interesting beers in South America and Asia.

It´s not a suprise that no African beer made the playoffs.

Belgium – Rochefort Trappistes 10 – Rochefort – Abt/Quadrupel – The top product from the Rochefort Trappist brewery. Dark color, full and very impressive taste. Strong plum, raisin, and black currant palate, with ascending notes of vinousness and other complexities. “33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a diminished off-white head. Aroma is discretely spiced, mild caramel malt and subdued yeast note. Solid carbonation. Flavour is smooth, subdued fruity, slight yeasty. Very very very complex yet elegant (acetyl, raisins, malt, slight roasted, plum, winous, caramel, smooth chocolate and nicely bitter), not overly done, just PERFECTLY balanced! Emphasise has to be put on PERFECT aroma, flavour and palate. Nice lingering finish. Sharp edge in the far finish. It just falls slightly short compared to the Westvleteren 12, But: amazing, fantastic smooth and very controlled brew.” – yespr

Algeria – Algad Golden Pils – Tessala El Merdja – Pilsener – “Bottled. Bottle is Heineken look-alike. That gives a hint about the content maybe. Pale golden colour. Frothy head, rich at first, then slowly diminishing. Aroma is loaded with minerals, a bit skunky perhaps but no major off aromas. I sensed hops and minerals in the flavour. Mouthfeel is clean and lacks off flavours. Body is low, as is the bitterness, if any at all.” – rickgordon

Russia – Stepan Razin Porter – St. Petersburg – Although this brew has all the malty caramel characteristics of a classic porter, it boasts a bright, faintly fruity finish remarkable for a porter. Long-lasting head comparable to a stout; perfect for a half-and-half. “A red-brown beer wtih no head. The aroma is sweet with a metal-acohol note – as often found in strong Eastern European beers. The flavor is dry sweet malty – the alcohol giving it the dryness, combined with notes of metal, alcohol and some rostyness.” – ungstrup

South Korea – Craftworks Jirisan Moon Bear IPA – Yongsan-gu – IPA – A full-bodied hoppy ale reminiscent of Californian brews, this one is strictly for ale lovers, with a high alcohol content, strong citrus notes, and a dry finish. “Pours a finger and half of head on a cloudy dark straw colored body. The aroma is musty pine, lemon zest and some candy corn in the background. Unique but really good. The taste is woody pine bitterness with a light malt sweetness to balance it out nicely. The texture is crisp with soft edges and moderate carbonation. Quite enjoyable.” – fatehunter

Germany – Schneider Aventinus – Kelheim – Weizen Bock – Dark-ruby colored wheat doppelbock with a creamy fine head. Strong notes of ripe bananas, raisins and plums meet liquorice and roasty aromes. Full-bodied and warming, with a well-balanced and smooth finish. The ideal companion for hearty roast meat, venison and also fruity chocolate desserts, “Kaiserschmarrn” (pancakes), “Elisenlebkuchen” (christmas cookies) or blue cheese. “50 cL bottle. Pours slight hazy light brown with an off-white head. Wheaty, fruity and mild grainy aroma. Clove like flavour embedded in a solid wheat flavour, light caramel malt and a lingering almost dried fruity note. Ends with a lingering caramel malt and wheaty blend, mild note of spice inbetween. I like the way the wheat is downplayed – but it is still a wheat beer more than anything else.” – yespr

Portugal – Maldita Bohemian Pilsener – Aveiro – Apresenta uma doçura que contrasta com um ligeiro amargor, é uma cerveja mais consensual devido ao seu aroma a especiarias e à leveza do seu sabor. ” Bottled. Golden colour with a white head, medium lasting. Aroma has notes of yeast, slightly citrus and grassy notes. Flavor has notes of hay, cerealish, moderate bittery with a dry mouthfeel in the final.” – teddybeer

Ghana – Accra Chairman – Accra – Spice/Herb/Vegetable – “Bottled. A dark nut-brown beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has strong notes of ginger as well as some notes of roasted malt. The flavor is extremely spicy – lots of ginger, but also black peber on an alcoholic, malty, and lightly roasted finish. Interesting – but a bit too much for me. Thanks a lot fiulijn for sharing this…” – ungstrup

United States – Three Floyds Zombie Dust – Munster, IN – American Pale Ale – A medium bodied single hop pale ale showcasing Citra hop from the Yakima Valley, U.S.A. “Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of thome50. Pours a cloudy golden with a creamy white head. Very fresh and citrusy hop aroma. Medium body, a little sweet fruitiness but it’s really a showcase for the fresh and crisp hops. Bitter but never astringent and always with an appealing light underlying sweetness. Very enjoyable. 131112” – papsoe

Argentina – Antares IPA – Mar de Plata – Part of the “Selecciones del Brewmaster” series. Avalaible only at the Antares chain pubs on tap and 1000 750ml bottles. “Tap at Antares, Rosario Clear copper color, small white head, lace. Gooseberry bush and tropical fruits in the nose. Medium-bodied. Nice grapefruity hoppyness, tropical fruity sweetness. Good IPA, easier to drink than abv shows.” – TBone

Bosnia and Herzegovina – Livanjsko Svijetlo Pivo – Livno – Zwickel/Keller/Landbier – “Poured a remarkably nice misty dark golden body with a small but persistent tick white head. Appley nose – not a good thing. Fresh though, slightly herbal and malty. Appley malty taste, actually refreshing, ending in a slightly too simplistic bitterness… quite papery. Light, bitter finish. Has some faulty, but none that can’t be attributed to the fact that it’s past its BB date… Ok and the slightly simplistic hop sort (though generously used). This is probably a pretty good beer fresh. And the locals kept on trying to convince us that it was really bad BECAUSE it was local (and apologizing). “Support your local brewery” doesn’t seem to work there. And it’s definitely better than the macro crap they ARE drinking.” – Marko

Iran – Black Delster – Teheran – Low Alcohol – Ingredients: Malt, hops, sugar, Vitamin B-C, carbonated water. “Can. Dark and clear. Decent head. Smells exactly like Grape Nuts, which for me is a comfort aroma. Has a thin palate but with sugars on the tongue. Mild barley malts. Is like a bowl of Grape Nuts with water, strained. Bland and boring but has enough sugar and malt action to keep me interested. Not bad for a non-alc, as the dark and barley-forward malts have some richer flavors.” – Beershine

Nigeria – Legend Extra Stout – Lagos – Nigeria is the world’s third-largest market for stout. Legend is a main rival to Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. Legend is real brewed stout. It is differentiated from other stouts in the market by its complete full brewing process that gives it a unique, richer taste and long lasting foam head, giving Legend the credibility to be called “The Real Deal”. “Bottle, 60 cl, shared by nilsas. It pours a dark reddish brown body, clear, and topped by a dense, finger-thick dark beige head. Lots of chocolate in the aroma, coffee, roasted malts and a faint alcohol touch too. Some prunes. The flavor has lots of chocolate and roasted malts, some dried fruits. A little bitterness chiming in as well. Full body and a pleasant carbonation level, pretty soft. Lasting roasted finish with a solid dose of chocolate. I’m sure I could survive some days in Nigeria. 140305” – yngwie

Ecuador – Doggerlander Bongo’s IPA – Sangolqui – American India Pale Ale style copper-amber beer. It has very high fruity-ester, citrus-like, piney aroma and flavor. Medium maltiness is present. A very refreshin beer named in honor of Bongo the dog who used to accompany us to brew in our homebrewing time. “Copper, orange, with good head retention; intense grapefruit, passion fruit, mango, fruity, piney aroma and flavor. It has the bitterness of an IPA and I think it is the only real IPA right now in Ecuador. Good beer definitively, lots of flavors and aromas.” – Rodriguez

After sampling this and Port Royal Export I started to believe that all Honduras beers are brewed from apple wort??” – TBone

Ivory Coast – Mamba – Abidjan – Premium Lager – Malty, German-style lager from the Ivory Coast, Africa. “This bottled brew poured a large sized head of fine to large sized white colored mostly diminishing bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body was transparent carbonated and orange in color. It had an malty aroma with a hint of orange peel in it and a medium tingly smooth mouth feel with a very light aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of mild low alcohol malt liquor that was malty and thin. This Malt Liquor would be good for people wanting an atypical Malt Liquor without the strong Malt Liquor flavor and palate” – thedm
