The space burping issue may make beer and other carbonated beverages seem like an unappealing option to future space tourists… but thanks to Australian beer aficionados who were unwilling to envision a beerless future in space, space tourists can have their space beers with out any encountering an unpleasant side effects. Engineers at Saber Astronautics Australia and 4 Pines Brewing Co teamed up in 2010 to create the first space beer, Vostok “4 Pines Stout”. What makes it ‘space beer’ you might ask– according to 4 Pines Brewing Co, any space beer must be low in carbonation and high in flavor, because in space, mild swelling in the tongue reduces your sense of taste. Vostok “4 Pines Stout” has been both space-approved, tested by experts in 0-gravity on a parabolic flight in 2011, and earth-approved, winning numerous awards for its taste. What’s next? A brewery in outer space of course… As of January 9th, 2014, this too has become a reality. The person responsible for making this happen is not beer giant Anheuser-Busch, but rather a 6th grader named Michal Bodzianowski. Even though this 11-year-old from Colorado cannot legally drink what he brews, he has already started to master the science of brewing.
